Ear Surgery Update - Not for the Weak of Stomach

Its Friday, the morning after my ear surgery and things are looking great.

In short, I had major ear surgery yesterday to repair a completely destroyed right ear drum, insert an artifical hearing bone to replace the deteriorated one, and removal of any scar tissue growing from my prior ear injury.

The surgery was very successful, in fact, the doctor said it wasn't as bad as he thought when he got in there.  He believes that my hearing will be restored, almost 100%.  Unfortunately, they weren't able to go in through my ear canal, so they had to make an incision behind my right ear and shave part of the bone away.  Sorry if that was TMI.  The best part of all, they didn't have to shave any of my hair!  I mean, what's a mom of two without pony tails?

Thank you for your prayers!  Vicadin and morphine are wonderful drugs for pain and sleep.  Too bad they don't let you take the morphine with you!  Matt and I stayed in Detroit at a hotel to recover and are enjoying a nice hot breakfast before getting ready to head home.  Please lift Matt and the girls up in prayer too.  They have a long, patient weekend ahead of them as mommy does her best to recover.  You know, when they mess with your inner ear, you have all those equilibrium problems.  So, besides being dizzy, I'm a little nauseated too.

Hopefully good news to follow in the next few days.

Glad it went so well! Noah had ear surgery when we were in college, had a prosthetic bone put in...he was deaf in one ear until then. Now he thinks he's at about 70%. Take it easy! Rest up and get well! Wish I could bring you dinner tonight!

I'm glad it went well too! I will pray for you all this weekend - and also for you to be able to get some rest throughout the recovery. Btw, I don't think it was tmi, more interesting than anything :)

So glad everything went well! Praise God. I have Meniere's and it's really tough when your ears are all messed up. I'm so happy for you!!!

I had to comment on your post because I also have a reconstructed right ear drum. You are the only other person that I have heard with the same surgery. Mine was over 20 years ago when I was in high school and aside from getting dizzy when on a swing or a boat, i have not had any problems. Praying that the recovery goes well for you.
(I go to Immanuel in Saginaw and met you at Pam's shower)

Wonderful news you are on the mend and surgery went so well.
We will be praying for quick recovery and for Matt and little ladies.
Forgive me if you've already explained this, but what was the cause of the ear drum deterioration and hearing loss?

Jen -

Actually, a number of things caused this. I had tubes put in my ears when I was young due to ear infections. Then when I was in college I ruptured both ear drums in a tubing/boating accident. The hole in my right ear didn't heal itself like the left ear did and I lost nearly 80% of my ear drum. As a result, I have had chronic ear infections in that ear which have caused further deterioration. My hearing is almost completely gone in that ear too. So, this surgery just about heals everything with a 10 day recovery. The recovery is a little rough...lots of dizziness, nausea and sleeping from the meds. But, it'll be worth it in the end. :)
